36 volt vs 48 volt

Looking for input on this important question. What really is the difference between a 36 volt cart and a 48 volt cart. (beyond the 12 volts).
I’ve seem some claims that 36 volt will have more torque. I also hear that 48 volt will give better “performance”. But what are the real details and what is the real truth. What defines “performance” anyway?
Club Car was the first to create a 48 volt cart along with Trojan batteries. Was this a real innovation and step forward? Or was it just a way to sell carts and batteries?
